On May 25, 1965, in Lewiston, Maine, Muhammad Ali took on Sonny Liston for the 2nd time in one of the most iconic moments in sports history! Heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali stands over fallen challenger Sonny Liston, shouting and gesturing shortly after dropping Liston with a short, hard right to the jaw, where the bout lasted only one minute into the first round. Many call this moment in that photo "The Phantom Punch" as it's controversial if Liston through the fight for gambling debts often mentioned by boxing historians or if Ali legitimately wrecked Sonny in the ring on the punch that was as if a "phantom knocked him out".
What you find with this photo is 99.9% of the time it is signed by Muhammad Ali, but never really do you ever find an authentic signature of Sonny Liston accompanying the autograph, as his true authentic signatures are one of Boxing's toughest to come by. He was usually not the biggest autograph signer and when people would request an autograph of his through the mail his secretary was the one signing the autograph. His signatures are very difficult to come by. The autograph is from a post card from the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas, where he signed it in person at a James Brown concert. Sonny did live in Las Vegas and is buried there too. Ali's signatures are a lot more common, but the high quality signatures of his are very hard to come by, like the one we have pictured in this framed collage. As he got older and the Parkinson's set in, his signature changed dramatically and often times unrecognizable. The signature we have in this piece was signed in the 1980s or 1990s sometime, hence why the signature is incredible, and every letter is spelled out clean. In addition, Ali's signature was signed on an envelope display that also shows the same image as the big photo in this collage.
