As of 2026, the sports and entertainment autograph market recognizes three third-party authenticators as industry-standard:
All three provide (a) opinion-based authentication by full-time expert authenticators, (b) a serialized COA, (c) a tamper-evident hologram affixed to the item, and (d) an online database where anyone can verify the piece by serial number.
All three services attach a tamper-evident hologram (a foil sticker with a unique serial number) directly to the item, and issue a certificate of authenticity referencing the same serial. The hologram is intended to prevent COA-swapping (moving a real COA to a fake item).
Every legitimate certificate can be looked up in one of these three databases. If a serial number doesn't return a match, the certificate is either fake or from a non-industry-standard service.
PSA/DNA and Beckett are both excellent. JSA is fully accepted too. Use whichever has faster turnaround at the moment.
JSA is the strongest choice — their music and entertainment exemplar library is the deepest in the industry. Beckett and PSA/DNA both authenticate entertainment pieces but JSA is the specialist.
JSA is the industry leader. James Spence himself is a widely-cited expert witness for presidential and Civil War-era autograph authentication.
PSA/DNA is the industry standard because PSA grades the cards themselves and can encapsulate the autograph inside the grading slab.
Consider getting two authentications — for example, JSA and PSA/DNA — for maximum resale confidence.
An in-house dealer COA (like Inscriptagraphs' IGM COA) is only as good as the dealer standing behind it. At Inscriptagraphs, we issue IGM COAs only for items signed at signings we hosted, with photographic and video documentation of the signing event. Every IGM COA is backed by our lifetime authenticity guarantee.
Dealer in-house COAs from unknown sellers or without event documentation are not equivalent to JSA/PSA/Beckett authentication and should be treated with more scrutiny.
Inscriptagraphs regularly submits customer pieces to all three services on their behalf. If you have a piece you'd like authenticated (whether you bought it from us or somewhere else), reach out — we can advise on which service is best for your specific piece and handle the submission for you.
